Detecting mysterious components of hair

Scientists have discovered a new class, had never been known before in human hair. This discovery may help to launch the product line of shampoo and conditioner for hair treatment more effective.

Long hair, thought to be made up of three layers: core layer (medulla) in the center of the hair strand; the middle layer (cortex) accounted for the largest volume of hair and containing pigments; and the epidermis (cuticle) in the outermost.

However, the scientists used X-ray methods for studying hair, has discovered a new intermediate layer in a cross section of a human hair, between the epidermis and the middle class. The team also discovered that this new class seemed protein composed of a different format than the other portion of the hair shaft and this protein forms usually found more common in reptiles scales and feathers.

These findings may alter the fundamental way scientists recognize how the structure of a human hair.

Dr. Vesna Stanic from the Center for Brazilian synchrotron light source said keratin fibers in new class differences seem to the rest of the hair.

Previous research by Dr. Stanic et al, hair who is believed to have formed only includes a fibrous protein called keratin alpha as well as some minerals and certain lipids. Thus, her team was astonished when Stanic detects the absence of a key characteristic of alpha diffraction keratin in the area between the epidermis and the middle class of a hair. Type diffraction obtained, instead, the corresponding beta-keratin.

Beta is keratin protein fibers, which are arranged into arrays or bundles, often found in feathers and beaks and claws and scales of reptiles. The experts, similar in animals, beta keratin in human hair can also between structural role, which increases the strength of the hair fiber.

If this claim is true, it can provide useful information to help scientists develop cosmetic hair care line of new, more effective.
